The Jewish Coalition for Haiti Relief was formed by 21 Coalition members immediately following the devastating earthquake that hit the country on January 12, 2010.
The Coalition provided support for quake victims’ immediate needs as well as assistance for the country’s long-term recovery.

  • In the emergency phase of the relief effort, the Coalition collaborated with the Afya Foundation to ship hundreds of mattresses and blankets, as well as critically needed medical supplies to Partners in Health, a local NGO that distributed the goods on the ground. The Coalition also provided food, water, and basic necessities through Chabad, a Coalition member, and the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a long-time Coalition partner.
  • To assist the Haitian Diaspora community in the US, the Coalition supported the National Association of Jewish Chaplains by sending disaster certified chaplains to work with local clergy and organizations on arranging services for Haitian immigrants with family and friends affected by the earthquake.
  • Through a partnership with the Israeli Trauma Coalition, the Coalition facilitated a psychosocial support program working with first responders, empowering local leadership, and strengthening coping resources amongst local community leaders.
  • In partnership with the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), the Coalition funded an initiative with EarthSpark International to distribute solar lamps and expand clean energy capacity in communal tent areas across Port-au-Prince.
  • The Coalition supported two rehabilitation programs to assist quake victims who suffered debilitating injuries in the earthquake: the Coalition helped BRAC establish and operate a Limb and Brace Center to serve the needs of survivors who underwent emergency amputations after the quake. The Coalition also funded the joint program of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and Magen David Adom, which provided physical rehabilitation training to local staff to provide assistance services to amputees.
  • The Coalition funded the construction of a Music and Arts center at Partners in Health/Zamni Lasante’s Zamni Beni children’s home, a facility for 50 unaccompanied children with disabilities. The center is used both therapeutically and recreationally, providing a space for the kids to participate in structured classes and explore art and music freely.
